Selous Kulinda Camp

Enjoy your Tanzanian Experience

Selous Kulinda Camp is situated just outside the Nyerere National Park. The family owned tented camp, is for those travellers seeking authenticity and a connection with the local environment. The camp has a special independent spirit and sense of place. The camp offers guests a moment of serenity on the banks of the great Rufiji River, which is sometimes bank to bank rushing water, or in some seasons, it is nearly completely dry with little farm huts dotted amongst the reeds. Guests enjoy traditional experiences full of culture and soul. Selous Kulinda Camp offers guests the extraordinary opportunity to experience safari travel, in a different way, in an exceptional location and in buildings with their own particular personality.

The camp being unfenced allows the guests to feel part of the surrounding riverine bush. The staff have been working at the camp since its inception, which allows them to show their characters and their impeccable service to all guests. The camp offers guests the perfect escape to enjoy the best African wildlife without compromising on comfort, and offers a range of accommodation, from standard tents to deluxe tents which have direct access to private plunge pools.

Selous Kulinda Camps’ central point of focus is the stunning main building, where everything centres around. It is a lovely space are where all meals are served and there is a beautiful stone deck area overlooking the Rufiji River, where – weather permitting, meals can be served ‘al fresco’. There is a small, clear blue swimming pool, where guests can relax and cool down after a day in the park. There is a rustic bar on this deck area where you can order a cold beverage of your choice and if you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of the Bush Babies (brown greater galago) which hop around the deck area at night. There are a number of places around camp where private dining can be arranged or guests can have dinner on their tent decks if they wish.

Guest Feedback

“For the safari days our driver and guide was Francis. He was awesome, so knowledgeable about all of the animals that we saw. Also, he was very keen to please his clients to make sure they saw the animals they wanted to. Safaris are a bumpy ride but Francis managed to drive brilliantly and still spot animals from a distance. He even spotted a family of camouflaged wild dogs that he hadn’t seen since July so that was a plus.

The camp is about 15 minutes outside the gate of the park but that was no problem at all. The truck was in very good condition and seats were comfortable despite being bounced around.

I can’t recommend the camp enough. They have struggled to fill the accommodation there post COVID and for the last 2 days of the stay, we were the only 4 people there which is a real shame as it’s a good place to stay.”

“In our 5 days at the camp, including 3 days on game drives, we saw so many of the animals that we hoped to observe, including watching their natural behaviour without the crowds of safari jeeps that can be common in other safari locations. On our first game drive we headed a long distance into the park where Maarufu located a pride of lions which we watched at very close quarters. The second drive we only passed one other vehicle the entire day – everyone else had gone to find the lions and we had the rest of the park seemingly to ourselves. We watched an elephant shaking trees to dislodge fruit, and other waiting for baboons to throw fruit down to them. A fat-bellied male lion lying next to what remained of a wildebeest, while the female who probably killed it for him lay a short distance away watched closely by cautious impala.”

“We had the most wonderful stay at Selous Kulinda Camp, if you’re wanting have a true Tanzanian Safari experience, I cannot recommend Kulinda camp highly enough.

The Safari camp is thoughtfully and authentically decorated, we arrived to our beautiful Safari tent and infinity pool overlooking the rafiki river. The first thing we noticed was the peaceful quietness listening to the baboon and hippos near by. Masii Mara walk us to and from our tents to the main lodge at night after standing on the balcony and calling out for them! What an experience and they are so lovely and in tune with nature.

Adbullah took us on a shared safari day trip in a 6 passenger open sided safari jeep where we saw more animals than we could have imagined! We saw lions, elephants, hippos, giraffes and more. Adbullah’s local knowledge and knowledge of not only animals but also flora and fauna was incredible and beautifully put across. We had a lovely lunch out in the bush, on a table and chairs by a lake with a beer. One of the most incredible experiences.”
